Our Approach

Our person centred approach is designed to put empowerment into the hands of the person to lead a fulfilling life and take control of their own situation. It originates from the psychologist, theorist and counsellor Carl Rogers in the 1950's, who pioneered the practice of person centred counselling as an alternative approach to the previously post-Freudian/psychoanalytical dominated field of psychotherapy and counselling. This was in response to the predominantly medical perspective on treating psychological "disorders", that sought to label patients problems in ways that fit the therapists own theoretical framework.

Recent research such as "the impact of person centred planning" (Emerson et al 2005), suggests that Person Centred Planning can make a considerable difference to people's quality of life and explores the optimum conditions for Person Centred Approaches.
